Mariners Edge Guardians 8-7 in Spring Training Showdown
Game Recap
The Mariners triumphed over the Guardians in a thrilling 8-7 spring training matchup. While the game was televised, I caught the action on my drive through the mountainous landscapes of Idaho, stopping at Scooter’s to share the highlights.
Bryce Miller’s Debut
Bryce Miller made his season debut, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing three hits while striking out one. The broadcast team debated whether his notable pitch was a splitter or a curveball, with Gameday classifying it as a splitter. Miller reached a velocity of 98.4 mph on his four-seam fastball, though he did give up a double on that pitch. Shannon Drayer noted that Miller chose not to undergo surgery for his bone spur, opting for a gel injection that has effectively managed his pain.
WBC Participants Shine
Julio Rodríguez, preparing to join Team Dominican Republic, had a strong performance with a double and two walks in four plate appearances. Cal Raleigh also contributed significantly with two doubles, while Randy Arozarena added a double during an exciting first inning that featured three consecutive doubles from the trio.
Luke Raley vs. Dominic Canzone
The competition between Luke Raley and Dominic Canzone is heating up. Raley continued his strong spring with a hard-hit double off former Mariner Matt Festa, clocking in at 109.8 mph. Canzone also made his mark with a line-drive single that found its way to center field.
Michael Arroyo’s Strong Showing
Michael Arroyo remained a key player, recording two hits including his second double of the spring, along with a walk. He also successfully initiated a challenge, demonstrating his keen understanding of the strike zone. Colt Emerson contributed with two hits as well, including a triple.
Brock Rodden Hits a Home Run
Brock Rodden celebrated his first home run of the spring, connecting on a first-pitch cutter. His performance is a positive sign as he continues to recover.
Pitching Performance
The bullpen had a mixed day. Abdiel Mendoza, who was a surprise addition to the Mariners, delivered a strong performance by finishing the second inning without allowing any runs. Casey Legumina also shone with a clean fifth inning that included a strikeout. However, Cooper Criswell struggled somewhat, giving up two runs over two innings. Ryan Loutos faced challenges, allowing a three-run homer to Petey Halpin. Cole Wilcox’s outing was intriguing as he displayed impressive stuff, despite some command issues.
Looking Ahead
As spring training progresses, I look forward to more updates, especially with some players departing for the World Baseball Classic. My first day at spring training is set for Saturday, coinciding with Kade Anderson’s professional debut. Stay tuned for more content as I share my experiences from the field.
